Washington, DC - Hôm nay (11/10/2012), công ty luật Woodley McGillivary thay mặt cho những nhà tổ chức công đoàn lao động của Việt Nam, Đoàn Huy Chương, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh và Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng, vơí sự tư vấn của Freedom Now, đã gửi một thỉnh nguyênguyê đến Nhóm công tác LHQ về việc giam giữ tùy tiện: Thỉnh nguyện thư tìm kiếm một sự xác định từ đám đông các chuyên gia độc lập rằng việc tiếp tục giam Đoàn Huy Chương, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh và Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng là tùy tiện và vi phạm luật pháp quốc tế.

“Bằng việc bỏ tù Đoàn Huy Chương, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh và Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng nhằm đáp trả lại các hoạt động hợp pháp của họ như việc tổ chức công đoàn, chính quyền Việt Nam tiếp tục vi phạm các quyền cơ bản của việc tự do lập hội và thể hiện chính kiến” – Maran Turner, Giám đốc điều hành củaFreedom Now nói. “Chúng tôi kêu gọi chính quyền hãy phóng thích họ ngay lập tức và vô điều kiện, đồng thời chấm dứt việc đàn áp các công đoàn độc lập”.

Chính quyền Việt Nam đã bắt Đoàn Huy Chương, Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh và Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng vào đầu năm 2010 sau khi họ làm việc để tổ chức bãi công cho các công nhân nhà máy sản xuất giày Mỹ Phong tại Việt Nam. Sau khi giam giữ mà không có bản án và biệt giam họ trong nhiều tháng, chính quyền đã kết án họ đe dọa an ninh quốc gia 10 ngày trước khi phiên toà xét xử vào tháng 10/2010. Tại phiên tòa, bộ ba không được đại diện thông qua luật sư hoặc được phép nói để bào chữa cho mình. Bị kết tội sau một phiên tòa khép kín, Đoàn Huy Chương và Đỗ Thị Minh Hạnh đã bị kết án bảy năm tù giam, còn Nguyễn Hoàng Quốc Hùng lên đến chín năm tù. Trong suốt thời gian giam giữ, những nhà hoạt động này đã nhiều lần bị đánh đập và bị bắt buộc phải trải qua lao động khắc nghiệt mặc dù gặp vấn đề nghiêm trọng về sức khỏe.

For Immediate Release: UN Petition filed on behalf of imprisoned Vietnamese labor organizers to obtain opinion that their ongoing detention violates international law

Washington, D.C (October 11) - Today, the law firm Woodley & McGillivary, in consultation withFreedom Now, submitted a petition to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on behalf of imprisoned Vietnamese labor organizers Doan Huy Chuong, Do Thi Minh Hanh, and Nguyen Hoang Quoc Hung. The petition seeks a determination from the body of independent experts that the continued detention of Doan, Do, and Nguyen is arbitrary and a violation of international law.

“By imprisoning Doan, Do, and Nguyen in response to their legitimate activities as union organizers, the Vietnamese government continues to violate their fundamental rights to freedom of association and expression,” said Freedom Now Executive Director Maran Turner. “We call on the government to immediately and unconditionally release them and cease its persecution of independent trade unionists.”

The government arrested Doan, Do, and Nguyen in early 2010 after they worked to organize striking employees of the My Phong shoe factory in Vietnam. After holding them without charge and in solitary confinement for months, authorities charged them with threatening national security 10 days before their trial in October, 2010. At trial, the trio were not represented by legal counsel or allowed to speak in their own defense. Found guilty after a closed trail, Doan and Do were sentenced to seven years in prison and Nguyen to nine years in prison. Throughout their detention, the organizers have been repeatedly beaten and are forced to endure hard labor despite serious health problems.

Freedom Now represents Doan, Do, and Nguyen, along with the law firm Woodley and McGillivary, as international pro bono legal counsel.
